This year’s Freshers Varsity Match was brimming with talent and promise. Despite battling the elements as much as the Oxford team, the Cambridge men performed excellently. Special mentions go to Oli Hector, who hurdled his way into a convincing win in both the 110mH and 400mH to kick off the day, as well as Sam Oteng-Ntim and Alex Woodcock for cruising their way into a 1-2 Cambridge finish in the 100m. Alex followed up his 100m win with a victory in the 200m, and later joined the well-drilled 4x100m relay team in defeating the Oxford men who forgot the baton should be held on to during the anchor leg. In the field events, Oyare Aneju secured a double win in the shot put and discus. Fast forward a few months and VFEAR was upon us, with the entire men’s team on top form resulting in our victory on the track. Our sprinters did not disappoint, one such example being Mounir Hinedi and Zute Ogbedeh securing us a win in the 60m. Satoki Shimamume and Edmond Bruce completed the quartet that also took home the 4x200m relay win. Our field athletes equally performed at a high level with Georgios Zaphiris winning both the long and triple jump by a clear margin. Moreover, the trio Peter Cassidy, Marley Young and Thieme Schmidt are to be commended for their impressive 1-2-3 win in the hammer. Finally, Philip Odugbile tied first with Oxford in the high jump in what was a hard-fought competition. We had a small group make their way up to Sheffield for BUCS Indoors; there was a healthy mixture of first-timers and seasoned veterans. Highlights include Jeremy Dempsey who progressed to the 3000m final where he came 3rd. Angus Harrington and Adam Dray also made it to the 800m final coming in 4th and 5th respectively against stiff competition.
